The action cam market has been expanding rapidly with the market leader GoPro coming out with new products. GoPro cameras have been featured extensively at sport events and national geographic shows.

Design and Accessories

Design wise the GoPro Hero4 looks exactly the same as the previous models. This means that the previous waterproof housing fits the new model, as well as all the accessories. Once you start going more specific however, you’ll notice that some of the things have changed.

The camera status and WiFi lights that were on the front of the camera are now two small slits on the left of the LED screen.

GoPro Hero4 Black ReviewOn the right hand side, what used to be a WiFi button, is now a settings button. If you hold it down for a couple of settings it will still enable you to turn WiFi on and off.

The biggest change about the Hero4 is definitely the battery. It is no longer accessible from the back but instead from the bottom. Eventough this makes swapping the batteries easier, the new design means that you can’t use batteries from previous models.

As far as accessories and mounting goes, you can use all of the same old accessories that have been made for GoPro since the start.

Video Quality

The quality on the GoPro Hero4 Black is amazing. What makes us especially happy is the improvement of low-light and night scenes handling, which in the past has been a big let down.

This is the best action cam for resolution hungry people. You have a variety of frame rates to choose from. From high 4K resolutions at 30, 25 or 24fps to low 480p 240fps.

Altough shooting in 4K provides a better image, most users will probably still be using the 1080p. The GoPro Hero4 Black enables Full HD recording at 120, 90, 60, 50, 48, 30, 25 and 24fps. This allows you to produce even smoother slow-motion footage than before.

The biggest shortcoming however, is the lack of electronic image stabilization (unlike the Sony FDR-X1000V). Luckily having a 4K video quality here can help you. 4K allows you to crop videos and still keep the full HD quality.

WiFi, Bluetooth and App

Just like the other GoPro models, the Hero4 has a WiFi that can be used for viewing a live stream or changing camera settings via a smartphone app. New Hero4 is also the first of the GoPros to also have Bluetooth.

Battery life time is still the biggest shortcoming of GoPro action cams. Recording at 4K 30fps with WiFi turned on, the Hero4 Black will last around 45 minutes. Turning WiFi off and using 1080p will increase the battery life to around 1 hour 10 minutes.

Also remember that the new GoPro Hero4 Black isn’t compatible with any of the older GoPro batteries. So you will probably need to buy new ones.

GoPro Hero4 Black is an amazing and definitely one of the best action cams available. The real question is the $500 price tag.

If you are a huge GoPro fan, in need of a high selection of mounts and want the best then this is the camera for you. Having 4K video quality at 30fps is a great improvement but shooting at Full HD 1080p 120fps is the real cherry on the top.
