It has been over a year now since GoPro released the Hero5 Black action camera. It received whole new features to make GoPro attractive again. Well the competitors aren’t sleeping and GoPro has had to work harder than ever before. So this time they decided to do it big and come out with their best ever action camera: the Hero6 Black! Everything about the camera has received upgrades and it’s now the second available action camera to support 4K resolutions at 60fps! And not to mention an upgraded image stabilization system that even works with 4K. That’s something I’m really happy about. So that’s why I put together this review to also see how the upgrades look in real life.

Design & Accessories
The GoPro Hero6 Black looks exactly the same as the Hero5 Black. If you aren’t familiar with the Hero5, then it has a rectangular shape with a dimension of 62×44.6×32.7mm / 2.4×1.75×1.3″. The body itself is made out of strong rubbery plastic, which is really high quality. The main reason for that is to make the action camera waterproof without having to use a separate case. It’s naturally waterproof up to 33ft / 10m.
The action camera has also got two LCD screens. The front part has a small 1″ monochrome LCD screen that displays battery life, the current mode and record time. So all the basic information you might need fast. The back side has a fantastic 2″ LCD touchscreen. It’s one of those nicer touchscreens that you can also find on phones. Really simple to use and reacts fantastic to movements. It’s also easy to scroll through the menu as it doesn’t go deeper into a menu the second you touch the screen.
There are two buttons on the action camera. There’s a menu/power button on the left of the camera. The record button is on the top. I also like the build quality there as well. They feel solid when using them, like not loose at all. There is also a compartment at the bottom of the action camera for the battery and a MicroSD card. The right side of the camera has the USB-C and MicroHDMI ports. Most of the new gadgets have USB-C ports now so I’m glad to see it on the new GoPro Hero6 Black as well.
GoPro has always been known for their fantastic selection of accessories. That is also the case with the Hero6 Black as it uses the very same adapters as all the other action cameras in their line. Perhaps the only downside is that you don’t get as many accessories with the Hero6 Black as with other brands. The camera comes with a frame, a mounting buckle, a flat and curved adhesive mounts. Plus a USB-C cable of course. Which is definitely enough to get started with the camera as adhesive mounts are the most used ones. But still I’d personally like to see more accessories being included with the camera.
Video & Features
Video quality has increased a lot in the past couple of years. A 4K resolution is nothing special anymore and it’s even expected from most action cameras now. The new GoPro has a completely new GP1 chip which has enabled higher frame rates, better image quality and an improved image stabilization. Compared to the Hero5 Black, the new Hero6 is 2x more powerful. Which is a pretty crazy improvement. Thanks to that, the new GoPro actually supports 60 frames per second when recording in a 4K resolution. Not to mention 240fps at 1080p Full HD. So you can now record insane slow motion videos at Full HD. This has never been possible before, at least not with an action camera!
Here’s a perfect example of what you can do with the Hero6 Black action camera. First of all this video is record in 4K resolution at 60fps. And the footage is extremely sharp. In my opinion GoPro has improved their colors and they now look more vibrant than before. At 4K there is hardly any blur and again everything is crystal clear even when viewing at full screen. There is also almost perfect lightning there so obviously the quality will not be that great in bad lightning. Not bad but there will definitely be some noise.
Also you can use the included GPS to later display the data on your videos. It can definitely make the videos more interactive and maybe even a cool factor. You can do that by getting a program called DashWare. It’s officially supported by GoPro and you can even find DashWare tutorials on their website.
The new GoPro Hero6 Black also has an advanced Digital Image Stabilization. By advanced I mean that it’s an improved version of the previous one, which only worked up to 2.7k resolutions. The new stabilization system also works when recording in a 4K resolution at up to 30fps. So you can have fantastic smooth 4K videos as well. Only 3 action cameras in total currently support that. So it’s great to see that GoPro has also improved in that section. And their system does work really well as you can see from that video. Obviously there will still be some vibration but it does make the video way smoother compared to without using it.
The GoPro Hero6 Black is definitely a fantastic action camera. Compared to the Hero5 Black, the new version has received some well needed upgrades. Since there is only one other action camera currently available with the similar technical specifications, then the Hero6 is definitely one of the best available at the moment. Of course the $500 price tag is quite expensive but GoPro does come with the very best build quality and support for accessories. Plus the case is already waterproof, which makes it perfect for extreme sports and even as a social action camera.
I will be comparing it to a few other action cameras as well. But if you are looking for a high quality action camera, then GoPro is always a safe choice. You just can’t go wrong with it and the support is always there to help. Is it worth the upgrade from a Hero5 Black? Probably not, but if you are looking for a brand new action camera, then it’s definitely worth the extra investment.
